OAKESDALE, Wash. — As gas prices in the United States hit record highs, farmers in Eastern Washington are feeling the pinch.
According to AAA Fuel Prices, the average price for a gallon of diesel in Washington is $7.43. Mitch Engel, owner of Wisota Farms in Oakesdale, said those prices make turning a profit harder.
“It’s just another expense that you have to do,” Engel said. “I mean, you have to have fuel.”
Compared to drivers, farmers usually pay slightly less for diesel since it isn’t taxed. Just a few weeks ago, Engel bought 4,000 gallons for over $5 a gallon. He said that’s still almost twice as much as he’s used to spending.
Engel said he nets $5-6 for a bushel of wheat, and once he subtracts expenses, he might only make a few cents. While the farm’s harvest is done for the year, Engel’s still waiting to see whether he’ll break even.
“That’s just kinda how it is,” Engel said. “It’s the way it’s always been. Doesn’t mean it’s right.”
Engel’s family has been farming on his land for over 100 years. He’s looking to pass the farm on to his son, and he said he’s not giving up.
“You try not to think about it too much, just for the simple fact that you just have to basically scrimp and save and hope you come out on the positive side in the end,” Engel said.
