SPOKANE, Wash. — Akin, an organization dedicated to supporting Washington families, has expanded its resources in Spokane County by increasing the frequency of supply distribution at its Family Resource Center.
The center now allows families to pick up essential supplies weekly instead of monthly, a change designed to better serve the community’s needs. The organization provides free diapers, wipes, cleaning supplies, laundry programs and parenting classes to families across Washington state.
Clair Foster-Dow, manager of the resource center, explained the reasoning behind the expansion: “We noticed we might have more opportunities to support families would be more helpful and more convenient for families who are already coming out here, so that it is easier to say oh I am just going to Akin this week and pick up diapers, or engage in a program, and then they can get those things when they are already here as well.”
Akin was created with a mission to disrupt systemic inequity by helping families access the services they need to thrive. According to the organization’s website, it works to listen to families and communities about their needs, imagine an impact beyond programs and services, and pursue a future grounded in healing and justice.
Beyond practical supplies, Akin offers a broad range of child and caregiver services, including behavioral health programs for children and families, early learning services, and family and community well-being initiatives.
Akin emerged from a merger between Childhaven and Children’s Home Society of Washington, a more than century-old organization. The organization says the rebrand has helped expand services and increase connection.
Akin Family Resource Center is open to children, caregivers, and parents. It is located at 2323 North Discovery Place in Spokane. The center is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, you can call (509) 747 – 4174 or visit Akin’s website at akinfamily.org
