SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Idaho Vandals (0-1, 0-1) dropped an all-time classic heartbreaker in a wild back-and-forth 38-34 loss to the Cal Poly Mustangs (1-0, 1-0).
Anthony Grigsby Jr. threw for 319 yards and four touchdowns, including a miraculous 34-yard touchdown to Tayvion McCoy on fourth down with only nine seconds remaining.
Idaho trailed 21-10 at halftime, but then scored consecutive field goals in the third to cut the deficit to one score.
The Vandals scored consecutive fourth-quarter touchdowns, the first topped off by a two-point try and the second a 75-yard bomb from Joshua Wood to Tony Harste.
Anthony Grigsby Jr. replied with a 15-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game with 2:16 to go, then an Idaho field goal took another lead with 1:03 remaining, and then came the miracle pass to McCoy.
The win is Cal Poly’s first ever against Idaho, snapping an 0-5 all-time streak.
Idaho next travels to No. 21 Utah on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 6:00 p.m.
