CHENEY, Wash. — As the Spokane area continues to recover from recent fires, another red flag warning will take effect Saturday, putting fire departments across Eastern Washington on high alert.
The warning means conditions are expected to be favorable for rapid fire growth and spread. In response, Spokane Fire District 3 and other agencies are adjusting their operations to prepare for any fires that may ignite.
“We look at our overhead staffing, our line staffing with firefighters on the ground and we plan that accordingly with the predicted conditions,” said Battalion Chief Aaron Porter of Spokane Fire District 3. “Obviously, things can change for the better or for the worse so it’s always a fluctuating plan.”
While the warning may heighten concerns given recent fire activity in the region, officials emphasize that residents don’t need to be alarmed about this weekend. However, preparation is essential.
“Everyone is on edge from what happened already, but this is a normal thing that we see during the summer,” Porter said. “But we always need to be prepared ahead of time. If residents can prepare their houses by making sure that vegetation is cut down around their house, no flammables around the house, those are the best preventative measures we could get out there to the public.”
Beyond protecting homes, clearing debris also helps firefighters do their jobs more effectively. Properties that are well-maintained are easier to defend during active fire situations.
“There are some houses that we have seen that are just immaculate that we drive up to and check during a fire. This is probably a structure that is easy to protect and save. Others we go in, and we see that things are overgrown or it’s hard to get into those properties, it’s really concerning to us,” Porter explained.
Overgrown vegetation and accumulated debris can slow firefighting operations and make it harder for crews to access and defend structures. Clear properties allow firefighters to work more efficiently and increase the likelihood of saving homes.
“We have some of the best trained people to deal with these situations, so expect the best from us when we show up. We’re here to help. This is our community. A lot of us live and work here so it’s a very valuable thing to us,” Porter said.
Fire District 3 will maintain heightened staffing levels throughout the red flag warning period. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any signs of fire immediately by calling 911.
