SPOKANE, Wash. — Tracking construction projects and navigating tricky road conditions during summer months can be challenging in Eastern Washington. The Spokane Regional Transportation Management Center opened a new building today to make it easier for drivers across the region.
The facility will allow the team to monitor traffic cameras and road conditions to alert people about crashes, road closures, and help drivers stay safe. The center monitors cameras for partner agencies including Spokane, Spokane Valley, and Spokane County, as well as Washington Department of Transportation cameras.
“We watch cameras for the partner agencies, Spokane, Spokane Valley, Spokane County, but we also watch WSDOT cameras, so all of that allows us to bring our technology to the modern day,” said Glen Wagemann, Eastern Washington traffic engineering manager for WSDOT.
The new facility will allow the team to convert all traffic camera feeds to digital format, making the website and mobile app feeds more reliable. The upgrade addresses a significant problem at the old facility.
“At our old facility, we were limited by bandwidth,” Wagemann said. “So as the public would start to click on the live streams, we had bandwidth problems. So during the winter time, when there was a major event, that would slow us down so the public couldn’t see those images really quick.”
The SRTMC website will serve as a one-stop shop for drivers seeking information before hitting the road. The City of Spokane, Spokane Valley, and WSDOT will use the platform to allow people to view traffic cameras, monitor road conditions, and plan their trips. WSDOT hopes this will be a one-stop shop for everything drivers need before hitting the road.
Right now, the SRTMC website displays where construction projects are happening, as well as current detours and future road work projects. The new mobile app has all the same features to provide drivers with the most current information before they start their drive.
Robert Blegen, public works director for the City of Spokane Valley, emphasized the benefits of the coordinated regional approach, particularly during emergencies.
“I think it will really stand out in a major emergency, if we have one regionally, that we’re all in one place,” Blegen said. “This new website gives the public one place to get information that’s coordinated, synchronized and comprehensive.”
