Hillsboro, Ore. – The Spokane Indians closed out their six-game road series in dominant fashion Sunday, rolling past the Hillsboro Hops 9-3 behind a balanced offensive attack and another impressive performance from Tommy Hopfe.
Spokane pounded out 14 hits, won its fourth straight game and finished the series with five victories in six games. Robert Calaz led the charge, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs, including three extra-base hits. Kevin Fitzer added two hits and two RBIs, while Tevin Tucker chipped in two RBIs of his own.
The Indians took control early, scoring a run in the first inning. They really made their move in the third, adding three more runs to pull ahead. Spokane tried to keep up, adding a run in the fifth. But the Indians were unstoppable, scoring two more runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to seal the win.
Hopfe is on a roll, getting two hits in five at-bats, which means he’s now hit in 21 games in a row, the longest streak in professional baseball right now.
Yujanyer Herrera did his job pitching, getting his first win of the season. He only let one run score and gave up one hit in five innings. He also struck out three players and only walked one. Then, the bullpen took over and finished the game. Hillsboro tried to catch up, but relievers Ismael Luciano and Austin Emener worked together to pitch the last four innings. Emener was really good and pitched 2 2/3 innings without letting anyone score.
The Indians are on a roll now, winners of their last nine with a record of 40-41 after their latest win. They’re feeling pretty good about themselves as they head into their next series, and for good reason. Spokane will now get a day off before beginning another six-game series against the Eugene Emeralds.
