SPOKANE, Wash. — Even with the threat of rain forcing competition indoors, the 3XBA Pro Tour tipped off Friday as one of Hoopfest weekend’s marquee events.
Originally scheduled to be played downtown, the professional women’s 3-on-3 tournament moved to West Valley High School, allowing opening-day games to continue as planned.
“It happens all the time. We play outside a lot and you always need to be prepared for a rain location just in case,” 3XBA CEO Alana McDonald said. “We were really lucky to have so much support so we could find a great facility and put on a good first day of the tournament.”
The 3XBA is the nation’s premier professional women’s 3-on-3 basketball tour, featuring Olympians, WNBA veterans and former college standouts while helping grow the Olympic-style game in the United States.
Among the players competing in Spokane is Tri-Cities native Talia von Oelhoffen, who starred at Chiawana High School before playing at Oregon State and USC.
“I’m just excited to grow the game,” von Oelhoffen said. “Hoopfest is the biggest 3-on-3 tournament and platform before FIBA 3-on-3 was even a thing, so it’s very cool. It’s cool for me to have this level of talent on display. It feels like a home tournament with my family and friends watching.”
Olympic bronze medalist Cierra Burdick also returned to Spokane after competing in last year’s event and said the city has quickly become one of her favorite stops on the tour.
“Second year back in Spokane. Last year was incredible,” Burdick said. “The vibes were immaculate, the energy the fans bring us. We’re just so grateful we can come back for a second year, and hopefully it’ll be a partnership we have for years to come.”
The 3XBA Pro Tour continues through Saturday, with teams competing for a share of the $75,000 prize purse as Hoopfest weekend rolls on.
