SPOKANE — Spokane Pride Festival kicked off Friday at Riverfront Park with entertainment, vendors and a kickoff party.
The event continues Saturday with a parade at noon. Organizers expect 50,000 attendees this weekend.
“This is going to be the biggest Pride ever,” said Matthew Danielson, executive director of Spokane Pride.
Saturday’s parade will go down Washington Street, Riverside Avenue, Howard Street, Spokane Falls Boulevard and end on Post Street. Those roads will be closed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
With road closures and the Maple Street Bridge out of commission, Danielson recommends leaving cars at home.
“Don’t bring your car. I think that’ll make everybody’s day easier,” Danielson said.
Bo Davis has volunteered with Spokane Pride for four years and says the festival brings coordination, teamwork and community.
“We come together and make this amazing festival for our community and show that we’re not afraid,” said Davis, lead audio volunteer for Spokane Pride.
Spokane Pride has expanded over the years, so organizers are offering additional activities this year. Friday’s kickoff party runs until 9 p.m.
Danielson said the event brings people from across the region to express themselves.
“We get community members from all around the region that come down here and just express their true selves and just are incredibly joyful,” Danielson said.
Most festival activities will end around 6 p.m. Saturday, but some stages will continue with entertainment and music later in the evening.
