SPOKANE, Wash – A former Spokane County Sheriff’s deputy plans to tell the jury in his assault trial that he was acting in self-defense.
Jury selection took most of the week for the trial of Clay Hilton. Hilton is charged with second-degree assault for his actions during an arrest in 2023.
Body camera video shows Clay Hilton striking Kevin Hinton several times. Hinton suffered six broken ribs.
An independent investigation ordered by the sheriff’s office said Hilton used excessive and unnecessary force. He was fired from the department soon after.
In a notice filed with the court Thursday, Hilton indicated he will claim he acted in self-defense.
The notice also invokes the state law that would require Hilton be reimbursed for any costs if he’s found not guilty.
The jury was seated as of Thursday afternoon. Opening statements are scheduled to start at 9:00 Monday morning.
Hilton also face federal charges in connection with this incident.
