SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane drivers face another major road closure starting Thursday when the city shuts down the Maple Street Bridge for construction work.
The closure will last through the 25th, with additional lane restrictions planned for Maple and Walnut streets. Construction on several streets in Spokane is creating headaches for drivers, and the city will be adding another major one by closing the Maple Street Bridge.
Students and staff at First Presbyterian Christian School will have to navigate the construction during their last week of school.
“It’s easier that it’s the last week of school. We do have some events going on so that still makes it complicated. We have graduation, we have indoor field day, we have water day, so there’s still a lot of coming and going,” said Tracy Blue, principal at First Presbyterian Christian School.
The city has outlined suggested detours. For people looking to go north or south, Division and Monroe will still be open. But drivers going south on Washington should expect to see some lane reductions.
For drivers looking to travel east or west over the next couple of weeks, the city is asking people to use 4th Avenue right by Lewis and Clark High School as a detour because there is already construction on Third Avenue with lane closures causing congestion there.
“3rd Avenue is a challenge right now because we have a project happening right there as well. Really it depends, just take some time to look ahead and decide if you’re trying to get somewhere that needs to have access with those streets,” said Kirstin Davis, communications manager for the City of Spokane.
Most of the work will be done on Maple and Walnut just south of the bridge, but the city says keeping the bridge closed ensures the safety of the road crews.
