Spokane, WASH. — The man who shot and killed Joshua Paine in May 2024 was sentenced to more than 28 years in prison this morning.
Caleb Carder pled guilty to first degree murder for shooting Paine in the Garland District. Video surveillance shows Carder speed around Paine and stopped to block Paine’s vehicle the day it happened around 5:30 a.m. You then see Carder and Paine get out of their vehicles, and then Carder shoots Paine multiple times.
Investigators say other footage from the area showed the two vehicles driving reasonably and showed nothing that seemed to prompt the shooting.
When officers arrived on scene, they said Carder was providing first-aid to Paine and identified himself as the shooter. SPD found a gun in the front seat of Carder’s vehicle and ammunition and an empty holster on his person.
A witness reported to police that the shooting sounded like Carder “emptied a whole clip”.
Carder had past incidents where he threatened to use deadly force, police said.
Detectives noted one incident in Airway Heights in February 2023 where Carder reported he was being followed and would shoot the person if approached. In that incident, Carder refused to meet with responding law enforcement.
