SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Zephyr remains alive for the final USL Super League playoff spot, needing a positive result against Brooklyn FC this weekend to have a chance to make the postseason.
“Yeah, we’re excited to continue to be in a match that matters and make a good fight for the playoff push,” Spokane head coach Nicole Lukic said. “So again, yeah, we’re just taking it as it comes and staying focused on getting three points.”
Spokane beat DC Power last weekend in a hugely important match, keeping their pace with Dallas Trinity, who also won. Spokane needs to earn at least one more point than Dallas on Saturday to advance.
“There’s no doubt that this game has pressure, like, we need to win it,” Zephyr forward Emma Jaskaniec, who scored the game-winner against DC, said. “But, I think that’s exciting. And that’s why you play sports, is to play in games like these that matter. And I think all that we can do is put our best foot forward and hopefully the cards fall for us.”
Both Jaskaneic and Lukic lauded the passionate Zephyr fans and the privilege to play in front of them in consecutive matches this late in the season.
“Playing here in Spokane is like nothing I’ve experienced before,” Jaskaniec said. “Definitely the best stadium in the Super League. Maybe I’m a little biased.”
“The community in Spokane has been amazing, rallying behind us,” Lukic said. “I know the players can really feel their energy late in the game, when we need to make a push to score a goal, and this place just lit up when Emma put the goal in at the 70th minute.”
A Zephyr loss or a Trinity win both lock in a Dallas playoff spot, while a Spokane win combined with a Dallas loss or draw, or a Spokane draw combined with a Dallas loss, clinches the spot for the Zephyr.
Kickoff at ONE Spokane Stadium versus Brooklyn FC is Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
