SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A suspected impaired driver crashed into a power pole near the intersection of South Bowdish Road and East 7th Avenue Monday evening, forcing authorities to close the roadway for more than two hours.
According to Spokane Valley Sheriff’s Office, the collision snapped the power pole in half, causing electrical lines to drop across the roadway.
Deputies identified the driver as 47-year-old Duana C. Vanorman. A witness told deputies Vanorman was traveling south in a Honda CRV at about 50 mph when he veered left, crossed in front of her vehicle and crashed into the power pole and a large rock.
Deputies observed signs of impairment and charged Vanorman with driving under the influence. They also seized suspected fentanyl that fell from his pocket during the investigation.
Vanorman was transported to a hospital for medical care. Deputies obtained a blood sample with a search warrant for testing.
South Bowdish Road was closed between 6th and 8th avenues until 7:30 p.m. while crews removed the vehicle and replaced the power pole. Deputies issued Vanorman misdemeanor citations for DUI and possession of a controlled substance.
