MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The Rebels were just too much for the Zags Friday, as Ole Miss ran away with the first round game of the women’s NCAA tournament.
Five-seed Ole Miss beat 12-seed Gonzaga 81-66, ending the Zags’ run in the NCAA tournament.
Gonzaga went on a 22-2 run in the final minutes to close the gap, but ran out of time.
They outscored Ole Miss 29-13 in the fourth quarter.
Gonzaga committed 21 turnovers in the loss and Ole Miss held leading scorer and WCC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year Lauren Whittaker to just eight points, 11 below her season average.
Sophomore guard Allie Turner led the Zags with 27 points.
Mead High School graduate Teryn Gardner hit three 3’s and finished with nine points.
Gonzaga won the WCC title in their last year in the conference.
They end the season 24-10.
