COLFAX, Wash. – Some residents in Whitman County feel like they got a big win this morning when Whitman County commissioners voted to put new rules in place that restrict where wind farms can be built. They prohibit new wind farms within seven miles of Kamiak Butte and other state parks.
During the commissioners meeting Monday morning, some expressed concern that the Washington State Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council (EFSEC) could overrule the decision. Dozens of people came to address the commissioners on both sides of the issue.
An Oregon-based company is proposing a wind farm with 45 turbines in Whitman County north of Pullman. Many people in the area placed signs in their front yard showing their opposition to the proposed wind farm.
This is a developing story, and will be updated throughout the day.
