OLYMPIA, Wash – If you need a reminder not to litter on Washington roads, maybe a furry little rodent can help.
Washington Department of Ecology rolled out new ads for its We Keep WA Litter Free campaign featuring a marmot.
The state calls the marmot “Washington’s official endemic mammal” and says the ads focus on the split-second decision someone might make to litter when no one is watching.
“To change behavior, we have to reach people before litter hits the ground,” said Amber Smith Ecology’s statewide litter prevention coordinator. “This campaign brings those everyday moments to life and reminds us to listen to that inner voice that tells us to do the right thing.”
The campaign will feature partnerships with minor league baseball teams, including the Spokane Indians.
Washington’s Department of Transportation and Ecology invested more than $17 million in litter cleanup statewide.
Department of Ecology says the most recent study shows the most commonly littered items include cigarette butts, food wrappers and snack bags, glass bottles and construction debris.
