MORAGA, Calif. — Gonzaga’s push for an outright West Coast Conference regular-season title came up short as the Bulldogs fell 70-59 to the Saint Mary’s Gael’s in their regular-season finale.
The Bulldogs entered the matchup having already secured at least a share of the WCC championship and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament, but could not complete a season sweep of the Gaels on the road.
After leading 36-29 at halftime, the Zags were outscored in the second half as the Gael’s methodically chipped away and executed down the stretch. Gonzaga shot efficiently in the opening 20 minutes and controlled the glass early but offense cooled after the break.
The Bulldogs struggled to string together stops in the final minutes, and was unable to match Saint Mary’s late-game execution.
With the loss, Gonzaga closes the regular season 28-3 overall and 16-2 in conference play. The Bulldogs will now turn their attention to the WCC tournament in Las Vegas, where they will open as the top seed.
