SPOKANE – A contractor working at Spokane’s Navigation Center decided to give back to the community he’s serving by hosting a barbecue for people experiencing homelessness.
John Coy, who was hired to install laundry facilities at the center, organized the event after witnessing the important work being done at the facility. The Navigation Center provides various services for those experiencing homelessness, and Coy’s addition will make it unique in the region.
“I think this is the only facility in the region where somebody is going to be able to come that’s living on the streets and take a shower and wash their clothes,” Coy said.
The laundry installation represents just one of many services available at the Navigation Center, where staff work to provide comprehensive support for clients. Tracey Gingrich, a client at the center, praised the approach taken by staff members.
“They actually do care. You know, they don’t want to sit here and push you out. They want to keep you here, keep you warm and keep you going in life and growing, you know, because the world is sometimes tough,” Gingrich said.
For Coy, the decision to host the barbecue came naturally. He has organized similar events before, driven by his own past experiences and current circumstances.
“I’ve been in need myself before. You know, so when you’ve been in that situation and then, you know, life blesses you with opportunities to give back, then it just comes natural,” Coy explained.
The barbecue drew people who lined up outside the Navigation Center, though not for the laundry services. Instead, they came for hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks provided by Coy. However, the impact extended far beyond the meal itself.
“When people that have their own little companies come here and barbecuing, and they’re out there smiling, it goes a long way and it will brighten your day no matter how bad your day is going,” Gingrich said.
