SPOKANE, Wash. — Thousands gathered at the Spokane Convention Center for the 5th annual Lunar New Year celebration, marking the holiday that officially begins Tuesday.
Spokane United We Stand organized the event, which started after the pandemic when anti-Asian hate speech made it challenging for Asian populations to feel they belonged.
“It was very difficult for Asian populations to feel like they belonged or had a space,” said Vina Cathcart, co-founder of Spokane United We Stand.
Cathcart said this event hoped to bring that sense of belonging. “Everyone who walks through these doors, you’re our friends, you’re our family, and we want everyone to experience that.”
The event featured more than 100 vendors, music and food. Those in attendance highlighted the welcoming spirit and the event’s importance to Asian Americans.
“This is probably the most saturated Asian American community you will ever see in Spokane,” said Frances Mortel with Asians for Collective Liberation. “You feel elevated to just be with our community.”
This year celebrates the Fire Horse, which represents energy, passion and renewal.
“This year is all about that change and some of the things that we need to leave behind,” said attendee Lillian Dai.
Last year’s event drew 20,000 visitors. Organizers expect this year’s crowd to match or exceed that number.
Cathcart said the plan is to continue growing the event, and honoring Spokane’s Asian American history while building community strength.
“It’s important for us to acknowledge that history but also build upon that. It makes Spokane stronger with our vibrant culture here,” Cathcart said.
