SPOKANE, Wash. — The House passed legislation requiring Americans to prove their citizenship before voting, with Trump administration support as the bill moves to the Senate.
House Republicans call the “SAVE America” Act necessary to prevent voter fraud and ensure only Americans can vote.
“House Republicans did exactly what the American people sent us here to do. Its promises made …. promises kept,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson.
The bill would require valid photo ID for all voters and mandate mail-in applicants provide citizenship proof in person using a U.S. passport or birth certificate.
Washington officials oppose the measure. Secretary of State Steve Hobbs said, “People are going to be, gotten after because of this list. This is just a way for immigration to target.”
Republican congressmen Dan Newhouse and Michael Baumgartner support the bill, while Senator Patty Murray called it “voter suppression” on X.
The Washington Women’s League of Voters warns about impacts on married women who changed their names.
“It’s going to affect nearly 70 million married women who have changed their names and may not, in fact, have access to the required documentary proof of citizenship,” said Karen Crowley, the group’s president.
The bill faces an uncertain path in the Democratic-influenced Senate. Critics argue non-citizen voting cases are extremely rare, while supporters say the measures protect election integrity.
