SPOKANE, Wash. — Federal regulators are issuing an urgent warning to vehicle owners with defective airbags to take immediate action and get their cars serviced at dealerships.
There are four car brands with vehicles with faulty airbags. They include Dodge, RAM, Jeep, and Chrysler.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reminding the public about a recall that first began in 2009, emphasizing that drivers should not operate vehicles with faulty airbags until they receive a free recall repair service from their dealership.
Since the recall launched 17 years ago, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 6.6 million airbags have been successfully replaced.
However, approximately 225,000 defective airbags remain in vehicles across the country.
The safety administration has posted a comprehensive list of affected vehicles, allowing car owners to input their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to determine if their vehicle requires the recall service. Many of the affected models are older vehicles.
The recall addresses airbags that pose serious safety risks to drivers and passengers. Federal safety officials stress the importance of not driving affected vehicles until the defective airbags are replaced through the free dealership service program.
Vehicle owners can look at the list provided above of all of the vehicles that are at risk.
Additionally, you can also access the recall database and check your VIN numbers through the NHTSA website.
