SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Seattle Seahawks are World Champions for just the second time in franchise history.
“This is what every kid dreams about,” Seahawks linebacker Derick Hall said. “A little bit towards that, I started to play the game just to get my lung capacity up. Just be able to run around a little bit, I fell in love with the game.”
Eastern Washington legendary wide receiver Cooper Kupp started the first offensive fireworks of the game, and he ended up leading the Hawks with six catches and 61 receiving yards.
“Only the teams that come together to fight through adversity… you’re going to see it, you’re going to find times when things don’t go your way,” Kupp said. “We had such a connected group.”
The defensive game slogged through the first half with Seattle’s M.O.B. “Dark Side” defense smothering New England quarterback Drake Maye and the Patriots with six sacks, the most by a Super Bowl team in 10 years.
“We’ve been calling ourselves the dark side this year, and we thought that was going to put a stamp,” Seahawks defensive lineman Leonard Williams said. “I think we still did, put a stamp on who we are and put a stamp on the dark side, but we were definitely seeking that goose egg.”
The Hawks finally broke through on an AJ Barner touchdown, followed by the second back-breaking turnover of the game: a Julian Love interception.
“It didn’t feel like work a single day this year,” Seahawks safety Love said. “It’s what you chase, it’s what you dream. And usually, it’s just words. Usually, you just talk about what you act. It’s how we lived. We just loved spending time with each other, and it showed the way we were connected this year.”
From there, Seattle added its fifth field goal of the night, not only setting a new Super Bowl record, but also helping push kicker Jason Myers into the first 200-point season in NFL history.
“Some of us, it took a little bit longer to get there and to win it,” Myers said. “But that locker room and what we had all year, it was amazing, it was a great experience.”
Not just Myers, but special teams carried all night, as Aussie punter Michael Dickson had three boots land inside the 10 yard line, helping to stifle the Pats offense even more.
“Always want to give my defense the best field position, and it was cool hitting it inside the 10 a few times and getting the boys around me,” Dickson said. “It was special.”
The Hawks would cruise to a 29-13 win, running back Kenneth Walker winning Super Bowl MVP with a 135-yard performance, the most rushing yards since Terrell Davis’ MVP performance in Super Bowl XXXIII.
The Seahawks are the first franchise in NFL history to complete a Super Bowl-winning playoff run without allowing a single turnover. Head coach Mike MacDonald is 13-0 when not allowing a turnover when leading the Hawks.
Seattle now has perhaps the most cathartic run in franchise history: beating the 49ers to win the NFC West and No. 1 seed, crushing the 49ers again in the Divisional, eliminating the best statistical NFC team, the LA Rams, and then getting Super Bowl revenge on New England.
