SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — As Super Bowl excitement builds across Spokane, one local business is serving up team spirit in an edible form that’s been a fan favorite for more than a decade.
De Leon Foods in Spokane Valley has been producing blue and green Seahawks-themed tortilla chips during NFL season for 12 years. With the Seahawks playing in the Super Bowl this year, demand for the specialty “Sea-Chips” has reached new heights.
The colorful snack idea began when Anthony De Leon was just 11 years old. His family’s business was expanding and looking for creative ways to stand out in the market.
“I just had the idea… what if we just color the chips? Like, I know it sounds so simple,” said Anthony De Leon, who now works in research and development for the company.
The simple concept has proven to be a winning formula. Store owner Sergio De Leon says the demand has extended far beyond the Pacific Northwest this season.
“We had some people that, just in the last couple of days, called me from, all the way from Missouri…and, other people from the Vancouver area,” Sergio De Leon said.
Despite requests from fans of other teams, the De Leon family remains loyal to the 12s. The business has turned down opportunities to create chips in other team colors.
“They want us to do, like chiefs or they want us to do 49ers. And my response to them is like, you know what? We’re not going to spoil our oil for your, team colors…so we stick to the Seahawks,” Sergio De Leon said.
The Seahawks pride extends throughout the entire store, with nearly all employees wearing their jerseys during the playoff season.
Fans looking to add some team spirit to their Super Bowl parties can purchase the Sea-Chips at De Leon Foods locations in Spokane and Spokane Valley through Sunday’s big game.
The family-owned business continues to demonstrate how a simple childhood idea can become a beloved local tradition that brings the community together around their shared love for the team.
