SPOKANE, Wash – Federal prosecutors have reached another multi-million dollar settlement over the fraudulent practices of a former neurosurgeon.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office of Eastern Washington announced a settlement with Multicare at a news conference in Spokane Wednesday morning.
It relates to former neurosurgeon Jason Dreyer.
Prosecutors say Dreyer performed medically unnecessary spinal procedures, then billed Medicare, Medicaid and other federal health care programs.
Dreyer settled with the feds in 2023, agreeing to pay $1,174,849.
Federal prosecutors came after Providence and Multicare, where Dreyer worked.
In 2022, Providence agreed to pay $22.7 million to resolve its case.
Dreyer worked at Providence St. Mary’s Medical Center in Walla Walla.
He resigned, then worked at Deaconess Hospital and Multicare Rockwood Clinic in Spokane.
Multicare paid $3.78 million to resolve the case.
“MultiCare is confident in the quality of care provided to our patients and the clinical decision-making of our providers,” said Bill Robertson, CEO of MultiCare in a statement Wednesday. “MultiCare vigorously litigated the government’s allegations for nearly two years. The record that developed during that process speaks for itself. We are pleased to have resolved this matter and remain focused on delivering high-quality care to the communities we serve.”
