LEWISTON, Idaho — A mountain lion was spotted on the Lewis-Clark College campus in Lewiston on Sunday evening.
According to Idaho Fish and Game, surveillance footage showed a young mountain lion at the ticket booth by the baseball field. When the area was searched, however, the animal was not located.
Fish and Game says mountain lions usually live in remote areas and aren’t seen often.
“While sightings of mountain lions in urban areas are rare, it’s not unheard of,” said Jana Ashling, Regional Wildlife Manager.
Fish and Game says if you encounter a mountain lion, do not run, do not turn your back, slowly back away while maintaining eye contact, and carry a noise device or bright flashlight while walking at night. If you are attacked by a mountain lion, fight back.
Mountain lions may also view pets as prey. Fish and Game says in order to protect your pets, keep them on a leash, observe their behavior, don’t leave pet food outside, check for wildlife before letting pets outside, accompany pets outdoors when possible and protect your small livestock by keeping them secured in a locked coop, especially at night.
Fish and Game asks people to report all mountain lion sightings or encounters to the Clearwater Regional Office at 208-799-5010.
