COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Ramsey Elementary School in Coeur d’Alene was placed on a safety hold Thursday afternoon when around six pounds of electronic blasting caps were brought to the police department for disposal.
According to the Coeur d’Alene Police Department, demolition crews working at a home on East Lakeside Avenue found a safe in the basement of the property with the blasting caps inside at around 12:15 p.m.
The demolition project manager brought the blasting caps to the police department for proper disposal.
Officers secured the blasting caps in the lobby and evacuated everyone nearby to a safe distance.
Police say local businesses were also alerted and the street in front of the police department was temporarily closed. Ramsey Elementary was also placed on a safety hold as an added precaution.
The Spokane Bomb Squad came to the police department and safely took the blasting caps for proper disposal.
“Occasionally, community members come across explosive materials that have been stored and forgotten over time,” the Coeur d’Alene Police Department said. “If you encounter anything suspicious that you believe could be explosive, please leave it in place and contact the Police Department.”
