SPOKANE — The Transportation Security Administration is strictly enforcing Real ID requirements for air travel, offering passengers without compliant identification a new temporary solution that comes with a fee and potential delays.
TSA has implemented a system allowing non-compliant passengers to purchase a 10-day temporary pass called “Confirm ID” for $45 through an online process that takes 10 to 15 minutes.
“We’ve been talking about real I.D. for a long time. Many years. We’ve been enforcing it since May,” said Jessica Mayle, TSA Public Affairs Specialist.
The new rules require passengers to complete the online payment process before going through security. However, travelers who arrive at checkpoints without proper identification face disruptions to their travel plans.
“If somebody gets all the way to the front of the line and they don’t have it and they didn’t know about it will give them a QR code where they can scan. But you do lose your place in line. You have to step out, take care of it, and then get back in line,” Mayle explained.
TSA reports that 90 percent of travelers already carry Real ID or another acceptable form of identification, meaning the enforcement changes will not impact the majority of passengers.
Despite the high compliance rate, the Washington Department of Licensing continues to process applications for enhanced documents as travelers prepare for the federal requirement.
“We just have people that are interested in getting the enhanced document still. So, we’re trying to make sure people, stay in compliance,” said Thomas Charlson, Department of Licensing Communications Consultant.
For Washington residents who still need to obtain a Real ID, the Department of Licensing requires advance appointments and specific documentation. Applicants must bring proof of U.S. citizenship, proof of identity, and two printed documents showing their name and residence. Those who have changed their name for any reason must also provide documentation of that name change.
The Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. The enhanced identification features additional security measures designed to prevent counterfeiting and fraud.
The enforcement represents the culmination of a multi-year implementation period that included several deadline extensions. Federal officials have emphasized the importance of compliance as the security measure becomes standard across all U.S. airports.
