SPOKANE — The City of Spokane will take control of 911 services within its boundaries over the next two years, officials announced Thursday.
The Spokane Regional Emergency Communications (SREC), Spokane County and the City of Spokane revealed a plan to transition emergency communications and funding responsibilities. Officials said the changes will not disrupt service to residents.
SREC currently handles emergency calls and dispatch services for 21 law enforcement and fire agencies across Spokane County. The city will assume those responsibilities within city limits, including calls for Spokane Police, Spokane Fire, Crime Check calls and report writing.
“Taxpayers expect leaders to address big issues by working together for the common good, and that is what has happened here,” said Chris Jordan, Spokane County Commissioner. “With this agreement, we are overcoming these long standing disputes between jurisdictions over big and important issues.”
The city will receive its portion of the 9-1-1 excise tax, sales tax and fees from residents that currently go to SREC. Officials said agencies will maintain coordination throughout the transition to ensure seamless service delivery.
The city will establish its own 911 center to handle operations within its boundaries.
