CAMP MURRAY, Wash. — Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency Wednesday following major flooding across Washington state.
The declaration enables the state to seek federal funding and positions Washington to receive additional resources if Ferguson’s request for an expedited federal emergency declaration is approved.
“I have declared a statewide emergency, and I will be requesting an expedited emergency declaration from the federal government today,” Ferguson said. “We need the federal government to grant that request. This situation is extremely serious. The next few days are critical.”
Ferguson activated the National Guard and emphasized the importance of residents heeding safety warnings.
“I want to encourage all Washingtonians to listen carefully to alerts from your county and emergency management departments,” Ferguson said. “If you receive an evacuation order, please follow that order. It’s critical to your safety.”
The governor thanked first responders and said he plans to visit impacted communities in the coming days.
The state maintains communication with local governments, tribal governments and federal partners, including the National Weather Service, FEMA Region 10 and the Army Corps of Engineers.
An expedited federal declaration would provide access to life safety measures and emergency protective resources beyond what the state can provide independently.
Travelers should check road conditions through WSDOT’s travel map, and residents can sign up for emergency alerts through the Washington State Military Department.
