SPOKANE, Wash. — If you’re planning to fry your turkey this Thanksgiving, Spokane County Fire District 4 has some tips to keep in mind.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, turkey fryer accidents cause an average of 60 injuries, 5 deaths and over $15 million in property damage nationally each year.
Fire District 4 wants everyone planning to fry a turkey this year to follow these safety tips:
Keep outdoor fryers at a safe distance from structures, trees and other flammable objects.Never deep-fry a frozen turkey. The turkey has to be completely thawed and thoroughly dry before deep frying.Do not overfill the fryer with cooking oil.Continuously check the oil temperature. If the oil starts smoking, turn off the burner.Never leave fryers unattended.Never use water or a garden hose on a turkey fryer fire.Keep children and pets away from the fire and make sure to wear protective gear.
