SPOKANE, Wash. — Holiday activities are kicking off all over downtown Spokane this weekend as families prepare for skating at Riverfront Park and a chance to meet Santa.
The skating ribbon at Riverfront Park opens to the public at 11 a.m. Saturday. It’s one of several activities ringing in the holiday season in downtown Spokane. Several families checked out the attraction Friday.
Daniel Taylor, a Spokane resident, said he’s considering bringing his children to the skating ribbon.
“I thought it would be cool to get the kids on the skating ribbon at some point. They’re getting to that age where it would be a manageable thing. I know STCU does the carriage ride, I always thought that would be a cool thing to take the little ones out on,” Taylor said.
This will be the Hewson family’s first Christmas in Spokane, and they’re looking forward to seeing what the holidays are like in the Inland Northwest.
“We’re having a blast going to check out new restaurants, new areas. We just ate at Frank’s Diner, one of the biggest attractions over here, so we really enjoyed that. Just to see all that Spokane has to offer, checking out new restaurants, pubs, everything,” Justin Hewson said.
Hewson is looking forward to ice skating with his kids for the first time.
Santa is scheduled to arrive at River Park Square at 5 p.m. Saturday. There will also be a tree lighting inside River Park Square, and Santa will be taking pictures starting at 5:45 p.m.
Post Street just outside the mall will also be lit up with Christmas lights throughout the holidays.
Taylor appreciates downtown’s transformation.
“Spokane, they’ve done a great job. I’ve grown up here. Downtown, they’ve cleaned up so much and just made this part particularly so much more enjoyable to visit. It’s awesome to see the transformation,” Taylor said.
