Spokane, Wash. — Families in Spokane are getting a little extra support this weekend.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center is hosting its second annual Community Baby Shower — a free event for expecting parents and caregivers of young children.
The celebration runs Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at the MLK Center on South Stone Street. Families can stop by for free diaper bags, games, and parenting resources from local organizations.
But it’s not just about celebrating — it’s about helping.
The baby shower also marks the kickoff of the MLK Center’s community diaper drive. The center is collecting diapers, wipes and other baby essentials to help families who are struggling to afford them.
Freda Gandy, the director of the MLK center, says donations have already started rolling in from local businesses and volunteers, with thousands of diapers ready to be handed out.
Gandy says the need is great. For many parents, the cost of diapers can reach hundreds of dollars each month. Programs like this, she says, help fill that gap and ease some of the financial stress.
Anyone can drop off unopened packs of diapers or wipes at the MLK Center — even after Saturday’s event.
The baby shower is open to all families, and everything is free while supplies last.
