OLYMPIA — Washington State fire officials are emphasizing carbon monoxide safety after two deaths and more than 500 incidents involving the deadly gas were reported across the state last year.
Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that can be fatal if undetected. The United States Fire Administration reports that more than 150 deaths are caused by carbon monoxide exposure every year nationwide.
According to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, key safety recommendations include:
• Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of homes, especially near sleeping areas
• Test detectors monthly and replace batteries yearly
• Replace detectors every five to seven years
If a detector alarms, residents should immediately exit the home and call 911 from outside, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Officials warn never to re-enter until emergency responders clear the building.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office warns residents should never use generators inside homes, garages or basements. Anyone suspecting carbon monoxide poisoning should seek immediate medical attention, according to fire officials.
