SPOKANE, Wash. — After nearly four decades of helping people in recovery from substance abuse, a Spokane nonprofit is facing possible closure, unless it can raise enough money to relocate.
Since the 1980s, ‘Our Club,’ currently located near 2nd Avenue and Washington Street in downtown Spokane, has provided support for those seeking recovery through AA and NA meetings, fellowship and peer support.
Today, the nonprofit says it might have to close it doors unless it is able to relocate the organization to a safer and more affordable location.
According to Our Club, the organization has struggled over the last few years due to declining donations, reduced membership and rising safety concerns at its downtown location.
“Membership and donations have dropped by more than 70%,” said Frank Howe, longtime volunteer and Our Club Manager. “Coffee sales and small donations can no longer sustain rent and utilities. We need to move to survive, but that requires community support.”
To help raise funds to keep the doors open, Our Club will host a ’50th Sober Birthday Celebration’ event, honoring Howe, the organization’s longest-serving volunteer with over 30 years of service.
The event will take place October 18 at 2 p.m. at Our Club (303 W. 2nd Avenue). Food will be provided.
The organization said funds must be raised by October 31 to avoid permanent closure.
“The event will not only celebrate Frank’s remarkable 50-year milestone, but also serve as a rallying moment to help ensure Our Club can continue serving the Spokane community for years to come,” said the organization in a press release.
