A newly published guide from the Washington State Parks Foundation is providing helpful information about how everyone, no matter what their accessibility needs are, can get outside and enjoy our state parks.
The Parks Foundation, in partnership with Disabled Hikers and the WA State Parks and Recreation Commission, recently released ‘Accessible Adventures: A Disabled Hiker’s Guide to 5 Washington State Parks.’
Described as “written by and for the disabled community” and authored by Syren Nagkyrie of Disabled Hikers, the guide details accessibility features in five State Parks on Washington’s west side.
The guide features descriptions of wheelchair accessible trails, accessible activities like picnic spots, beaches and interpretive centers and park facilities for Lake Sammamish State Park, Flaming Geyser State Park, Federation Forest State Park, Dash Point State Park and Saltwater State Park.
Other information in the guide includes parking access and locations for park maps, restrooms and water fountains.
“Nature and outdoor exploration are for everyone, and initiatives like this are vital to ensuring all state park visitors feel welcome and empowered. The five featured parks serve as a blueprint for the expansion of this initiative to other parks throughout the state,” said Parks Foundation in a statement.
