SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — Despite the warm weather on Thursday, Spokane County Public Works is in full preparation for snow removal procedures for the season.
County Commissioners Josh Kerns and Amber Waldref along with Public Works Senior Director Kyle Twohig discussed the preparations at a meeting on Thursday.
Twohig mentioned that the county is responsible for more than 5,100 lane miles of road. During the colder months, ice becomes a problem on some of these roads that lead to the county using a dry deicer to help melt compact snow and ice. A liquid deicer is usually applied overnight.
The county says for thick compact snow and ice, it installs a blade attachment to the graders that helps chew through ice.
Commissioner Kerns says a common complaint from the public is driveways being plowed in.
“For the past few years, Spokane County has diligently tried to address this problem by installing snow gates on our graders…but keep in mind that they are only used in residential neighborhoods,” Kerns said.
Community members can help with the county efforts by removing vehicles, watercraft and basketball hoops off the street. Also, when clearing your driveway or sidewalk, do not shovel or blow snow into the street.
Commissioner Waldref says it’s especially important to make sure your vehicles are in good condition for winter weather.
“Motorists should also make sure they have emergency supplies in their car or truck…like a flashlight, traction sand or cat litter, a shovel, flares, and some blankets,” Waldref said.
