SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash – The City of Spokane Valley could be home to a brand-new ice rink, paid for by an unnamed benefactor.
The city was approached by the benefactor earlier this year with plans for a $44 million ice rink adjacent to Sullivan Park.
The dual-sheet facility could be used for youth hockey, figure skating and other ice-related events.
The benefactor is working with the Innovia Foundation to lead the project.
According to city council documents, Innovia wants a 99-year lease on 11 acres of the property. It would include the facility and a hotel and commercial building that would offset operations and maintenance costs.
With a built-out purchase option, the city could buy the facility for $9.4 million.
Innovia’s plan aligns with the city’s goals of increasing tourism.
A study of the facility determined it would generate almost 10,000 new room nights and $6.9 million in direct economic impact by year five.
According to a presentation given to Spokane Valley City Council, the 65,000 square foot facility will have two NHL-size ice sheets, spectator seating, viewing areas, locker rooms, player support spaces and concessions.
The 120-room hotel could accommodate visiting teams and families.
The commercial space would be a 4,500 square foot space for family dining, retail or other services.
The proposal calls this a “once-in-a-generation opportunity”.
You can read the full proposal at this link.
The council is taking public comment on the project at its regular meeting this week.
The meeting is at 6pm at Spokane Valley City Hall.
