SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — The Spokane Valley Fire Department has been given a $5.5 million grant to help reduce wildfire risk in the community.
The funding comes from the Community Wildfire Defense Grants Program and is part of a historic $200 million investment nationwide.
The project hopes to reduce wildfire risk in the community by strengthening local capacity for wildfire prevention, expanding public education on wildfire hazards and carrying out targeted mitigation efforts in vulnerable areas.
SVFD is one of four fire departments in the state to receive funding. The funding is expected to be distributed over the next five years.
“This success reflects the hard work, dedication, and collaborative spirit of our entire team. From planning and coordination to building strong partnerships, everyone played a vital role in making this grant a reality. This award is a direct result of our shared commitment to reducing wildfire risk and strengthening the resilience of Liberty Lake, Millwood, and Spokane Valley. It demonstrates what we can achieve when we work together toward the common goal of protecting lives, property, and the environment,” said SVFD Deputy Fire Marshal Ken Johnson.
SVFD says it will partner with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources to launch this project. Work is expected to begin either later this year or early next year.
