COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Students in Coeur d’Alene now have access to artificial intelligence technology in their classrooms as educators look toward the future and embrace AI as a learning tool.
The Coeur d’Alene School District has implemented Magic School AI, a specialized platform designed specifically for educational use, giving students controlled access to AI technology.
Students can only access the platform when their teachers grant permission, creating a supervised environment for AI-assisted learning.
The district’s adoption of the AI platform is a shift toward embracing technology that students are already encountering outside school walls. Rather than prohibiting AI use entirely, the district has chosen to provide structured access within educational guidelines.
Magic School AI provides students with access to over 60 tools. The most popular in the Coeur d’Alene school district is RAINA, an AI instructional coach that helps students with general questions related to their schoolwork. The platform enables teachers to create temporary classroom sessions that last anywhere from a few hours to several days, tailored to specific assignments.
“I feel like it’s just a great way to learn,” said Josh Priebe, a seventh-grader at Canfield Middle School.
Priebe said having access to an approved AI platform has provided peace of mind in an educational environment where unauthorized AI use can be problematic.
“It feels like at school, it’s often a scary thing to get on ChatGPT or something,” Priebe said. “So, it’s always a comfort to know that there’s something that’s been certified and something that we’re good to be on.”
Social studies teacher Chris Pickens said the platform addresses his need for a structured, educational AI tool rather than general-purpose alternatives available on the internet.
“It was exactly what I was looking for, something that I could bring into the classroom,” Pickens said. “It’s a platform that wasn’t more adult-based, internet-based, something that I could structure, something that I could set the parameters on.”
The system includes built-in oversight features that allow teachers to monitor how students interact with the AI tools throughout their assigned sessions. This supervision ensures students use the technology appropriately while maintaining educational standards.
For students like Priebe, the platform has become a valuable resource for various school assignments.
“It’s just helpful in a lot of the projects that we are doing,” Priebe said.
