SPOKANE, Wash. — A rare piece of Washington’s history is rolling into Spokane this afternoon — with a full escort from the Washington State Patrol.
The original Washington State Constitution, signed back in 1889, will be on display at the Spokane Public Library’s downtown branch from 3 to 5 p.m. today.
Normally, this historic document is never removed from Olympia. It’s kept under lock and key in a climate-controlled vault at the State Archives. But today, troopers will carefully transport it across the state so people in Eastern Washington can see it up close.
To keep it safe, the constitution will travel in a protective display case, surrounded by State Patrol officers.
Along with the exhibit, special talks and guided tours will be offered to provide visitors with more context about the Constitution and Washington’s path to statehood.
Admission is free, and library staff encourage families, students, and history buffs to stop by during the two-hour window.
It’s a rare opportunity to see the very document that shaped Washington as we know it — without leaving Spokane.
