SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Park Board has approved a $73,865 contract with ALSC Architects to design a new standard for public restrooms across the city’s park system — a move aimed at addressing widespread complaints about poor restroom conditions.
“This is the first step in improving our restrooms,” said Nick Hamad, Parks Planning Manager. “About 75% of them need major repair or full replacement.”
Hamad presented photos from parks including Harmon, Rochester Heights, and Chief Garry, illustrating outdated or needing maintenance and care. Some, like Corbin Park’s historic structure, have character but lack modern usability.
The ALSC contract will help the city develop modular restroom designs for different park types, with goals of making them clean, safe, and consistently maintained. Community engagement will begin in October.
Several board members expressed strong support.
Although broader improvements depend on a pending parks levy, some projects will move forward regardless. A HUD-funded restroom replacement at Harmon Park is planned for 2026.
