EPHRATA, Wash. — City officials issued a precautionary water boil advisory for all Ephrata residents Monday morning after a water line leak compromised the municipal water system, according to a city press release.
The advisory went into effect at 8:55 a.m. and requires residents to bring all tap water to a rolling boil for one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes or food preparation, the city said.
The city has consulted with the Washington State Department of Health about the incident, officials said. Crews are working to isolate the leaking water line while pressure builds back into the system from other water sources and reservoirs.
Once repairs are complete, the system will be flushed and chlorinated, according to the city. Water samples will then be collected from multiple locations throughout the community and submitted to a state-certified laboratory for testing. The testing process can take up to 24 hours for each round of tests, officials said.
City Administrator Ray Towry is serving as the primary contact for residents with questions about the advisory.
Officials said they will provide a full explanation of the events once the water system returns to normal operation and the boil advisory is lifted.
