SPOKANE COUNTY – You might want to dig up those old vaccination records after Spokane Regional Health District learned of a possible measles case in the county earlier this week.
On Monday, SRHD said a Spokane County resident is presumed to have the measles. The health district is treating the case as positive while awaiting official test results.
With more and more cases popping up in our region, SRHD is urging people in Spokane County to check if they’re immunized against the highly contagious disease.
SRHD said the easiest way to track down your vaccination records is online, either on your healthcare provider’s website or the state health department’s site. Officials say this approach is much easier than calling, since providers and the health district are already overwhelmed with calls from people asking questions.
“If you are probably like 20-some and younger, it’s going to be with your provider. It’s when you’re older and you’re trying to locate those records, before we had computer systems, that gets a little tricky,” said Kayla Myers, an immunization specialist with the Spokane Regional Health District.
If you can’t find your vaccination records, the health district says getting another shot of the vaccine won’t hurt and can actually be a good option to boost immunity.
There’s also a blood test available to check if you’re immune to measles. However, these tests can come with some cost.
The measles vaccine is typically given as part of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine series, with children receiving their first dose around 12-15 months and a second dose between ages 4-6.
Measles is one of the most contagious diseases, spreading through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose and a characteristic rash that spreads across the body.
