SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg will retire October 6 after 36 years in the fire service, with Mayor Lisa Brown naming Assistant Chief Tom Williams as her successor effective October 7.
O’Berg became the first woman to permanently lead the Spokane Fire Department in April 2024. She joined the department in 2020 as Deputy Chief of Operations and agreed to serve as Interim Fire Chief before accepting the permanent position.
“The fire service has given me purpose, lifelong friendships, and the honor of serving something greater than myself,” O’Berg said. “Spokane’s strength lies in the dedication of its public servants to the community we serve.”
Williams has served as Assistant Fire Chief since June 2020. He brings 30 years of Oregon fire service experience, primarily with Portland Fire and Rescue, where he advanced from Battalion Chief to Deputy Chief.
“While I am sad to see Chief O’Berg go, she has absolutely earned her retirement,” Brown said. “I have full confidence in incoming Chief Williams, who brings a deep commitment to the department and the community.”
“I am honored to lead the Spokane Fire Department following the retirement of Chief O’Berg,” Williams said. “She is truly one of the finest Fire Chiefs I have ever had the privilege to serve alongside.”
