SPOKANE, Wash. — Wildfire smoke from western Washington blotted out the sun over Spokane on Wednesday morning.
Most of this smoke comes from the Bear Gulch fire, which is burning in the Olympic National Forest in Mason County. The fire has burned over 6000 acres since it started back on July 6 with only 3% containment.
Meanwhile, in British Columbia, the Mount Underwood Fire on Vancouver Island is also producing a thick layer of smoke, traveling over Northeast Washington and into North Idaho along the international border.
These fires were fueled by hot weather early in the week, but won’t produce as much smoke as temperatures cool on Thursday and rain begins west of the Cascades on Friday. Smoke from these fires will continue to drift over the Inland Northwest for the rest of Wednesday and on Thursday.
