GRANT COUNTY, Wash. — The Grant County Sheriff’s Office is warning people of someone going around and potentially pulling a paving scam.
According to the sheriff’s office, someone has been going door to door trying to sell a discounted asphalt paving job to homeowners. While it is not known if this man in particular is trying to scam homeowners, it is a scam that has happened before in Grant County.
The Sheriff’s Office says the scam typically works by someone going door to door offering to repave driveways or parking lots. The person then presents a low price for the job, claiming they have leftover asphalt from another job nearby.
The scammers typically arrive in unmarked trucks or vans and perform low-quality work. Crews could even disappear completely once paid or demand a higher price than initially quoted.
GCSO says to be wary of contractors who go door-to-door offering services, drive unmarked vehicles, claim to have “leftover materials” or offer suspiciously low prices, pressure you for an immediate decision, insist on cash payments or large deposits upfront, refuse to provide a written estimate or provide unverifiable credentials or references.
You can also research the company with the Better Business Bureau.
If you see this type of scam or suspect someone is trying to scam you, call your local law enforcement agency.
