SPOKANE, Wash – Fire crews will continue to attack a growing wildfire in Stevens County Sunday, with support coming from firefighters on the ground and planes in the air.
The Lake Spokane fire started Saturday afternoon south of Tumtum in Stevens County.
Stevens County Emergency Management said Sunday morning the fire had burned about 2,000 acres and is growing.
Early this morning, the Northeast Washington Fire Information page said the fire is east of Ford Corkscrew Road and west of the old quarry near Red Lake and north of Mt. Godfrey.
As of late Saturday night, fire crews reported that at least one structure was lost.
While evacuation levels are changing, Stevens County said Sunday morning that level three evacuations have been issued for the Happy Hills area, which is between Ford and the Spokane River.
The Red Cross has set up a shelter at Lakeside High School.
Emergency management officials say there will be a large amount of aircraft fighting the fire Sunday and people should stay out of the area and out of the water.
Fire crews have also asked for intermittent closures of Highway 291 in that area so that fire trucks and personnel can get through.
