SPOKANE, Wash. – The lights have frankly never been all that bright for Blake Wright, as he mashed his way through an award-laden career at Clemson before blitzing from Low-A Fresno to High-A Spokane.
“Yeah, felt really good,” Wright said. “Did a lot of work in Fresno to get here, but obviously the competition is better, so just trying to stay ready each and every day to get ready to go.”
Wright is understating himself; he earned hits in seven of his first eight at-bats for Spokane, one of the hottest debuts in the history of the club.
“It’s one higher level, so you’re going to see better competition, but at the end of the day, it’s still baseball,” Wright said. “So just go out there and compete.”
Even more impressive, this all comes just after stars Charlie Condon and Jared Thomas moved up to Hartford.
“huge shoes to fill, but those guys are incredible players, Charlie and Jared, they were having great years up here, and hopefully they keep going in Double-A.”
Manager Robinson Cancel sees this game improved too, despite such a small early sample size.
“He’s been a good addition for us, he started real hot,” Cancel said. “The past couple of days he got cold a little bit, but that’s a part of the game, but he just needed to come out and be himself and do what he do best.”
“It’s awesome, cancel’s been a great manager so far, super calm, but really good. Knows exactly what to say and when to say it.”
Wright crushed his first High-A home run last night, a solo shot to keep his average above .300, and he says he feels right at home with the new team with many familiar faces from back in Fresno.
“Looking at the lineup from the first game I played up here and the first game I played in Fresno,” Wright said. “It’s actually pretty similar. I knew a lot of the guys, it’s a great group.”
The fourth-round pick now focuses on settling in, and he says he’s loved his time in the Inland Northwest so far.
“I mean, my first game was on the Fourth of July, sold out crowd,” Wright said. “It’s been awesome so far, looking forward to the rest of the year.”
