KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — First responder agencies from around the region are showing support for the firefighters shot and killed in an ambush.
Agencies across eastern Washington and north Idaho issuing statements of solidarity and support on the deaths of two firefighters.
Firefighters were responding to a wildfire on Canfield Mountain in Coeur d’Alene when they were ambushed by a gunman Sunday afternoon. Two were shot and killed, and a third was shot but last reported to be stable.
The body of the person believed to be the gunman was located Sunday night.
One of the firefighters killed was part of the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and the other was a member of Kootenai County Fire and Rescue.
Kootenai Fire and Rescue confirmed the death of one their firefighters saying the department is grateful for the prayers and support from the community and surrounding agencies. The full statement can be seen below.
The National Interagency Fire Center located in Boise also shared support for the community.
A loss in the fire community impacts us all. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the fallen firefighters in northern Idaho. A tragedy like this is unthinkable and they will never be forgotten.
