COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — The Associated Press and ABC News are both identifying the gunman who killed two firefighters in Coeur d’Alene.
The organizations cite law enforcement sources saying Wess Roley was the man who shot and killed the firefighters on Canfield Mountain Sunday afternoon.
One of the firefighters was with the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and one was with Kootenai County Fire and Rescue. A third firefighter was shot and taken to the hospital. He was last reported to be stable.
Firefighters were responding to a wildfire believed to be started by Roley when they were fired upon in an ambush.
Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris said the gunman and law enforcement shot at each other during a standoff.
The gunman’s body was found with a firearm nearby after several hours. Sheriff Norris did not say if he shot himself or was shot by law enforcement.
Idaho Governor Brad Little ordered flags to be lowered half-staff across the state.
